Engagement Enhancements in LifterLMS 3.1.0

Say hello to LifterLMS 3.1.0! LifterLMS 3.0 introduced improvements primarily around eCommerce, membership, and access for your education platform. Now our attention is focused on the learning aspects of the LifterLMS software. We are asking you and ourselves questions like: How can we make courses and the learner experience even more engaging? How can we increase efficiency and usability for the teacher? How can we improve and extend quizzing, reporting, and learner analytics? If you haven’t already, please go cast your votes and make comments on the LifterLMS feature request board on what looks interesting and the most useful for you. So what is the top new feature in LifterLMS 3.1.0? The ability to add custom email addresses for To, CC, and BCC when sending email engagements If you are not using email engagements yet, you should know that you can send personalized emails based off of the following behavior triggers in your LifterLMS powered site: Student creates a new account Student enrolls in a course (This is a new trigger now available in LifterLMS 3.1.0) Student purchases a course Student completes a course Student completes a lesson Student completes a section Student completes a course track Student enrolls in a membership (This is a new trigger now available in LifterLMS 3.1.0) Student purchases a membership Lesson Gravity Form completed (Requires the LifterLMS Gravity Forms Integration) Once you select the trigger type, then you also get to select the specific one (course, lesson, membership, etc.) you would like to target for your personalized email. Now with LifterLMS 3.1.0 you can send your engagement emails to multiple people if you’d like. You can send it to multiple people, and there is a CC and a BCC field you can use. So what would be a good example of why and how you might use this? Allow me to set the stage … Let’s assume you have your courses and other teachers’ courses on your LifterLMS site. So you are operating as both a teacher and a publisher for your education entrepreneur project. Let’s assume that course completion is a big deal for your platform, and you want to celebrate that event with your learner. You set up a personalized LifterLMS email engagement that goes to your student immediately upon completion. You also CC the teacher of that course. Once the teacher is aware of that individual’s success, perhaps it is part of your company culture that the teacher calls the student or sends the student a personal email of congratulations and recommendation on where to go from here. You also BCC yourself as the web platform owner, so you can keep your finger on the pulse of what’s happening on your platform. Let’s also BCC your assistant who is tasked with sending the student a t-shirt in the mail with your company logo on it as a surprise bonus in celebration of their success. This is just an example of an amazing experience you can deliver by scaling the human touch through robotics with LifterLMS email engagements. How are you using email engagements? 4 Access Models for Courses and Memberships

Accessing learning content does not need to be like a door that is simply either open or closed. There are many possible nuances to online education access. In the last article we showed you the top 10 course and membership pricing models for what you can build with LifterLMS. In this post you will learn about the top 4 access models. It’s important to note that when course access is over in LifterLMS, a learner is not deleted of the system. They still have an account and they still have their achievements and certificates. 1) Lifetime Access Lifetime access is where the learning material and environment is available for the life of the platform. If your courses are completely passive, then lifetime access may make sense. If your courses require a lot of one-on-one work, then lifetime access may not be the best option. Lifetime access might help you get the sale, but your platform still needs to scale! I would also add that truly effective training typically runs it’s course and is relevant for a period of time. Once your learner gets the results you promise, they should no longer need your training. However if your platform also offers a strong community, then lifetime access may make sense for that reason. 2) Limited Time Access Expiration Limited time access from purchase (or free enrollment) is where the time allowed in the learning environment is limited based on when a new user comes in. One year of access is common for some training programs. Some training programs move faster, with terms like 90 days of access. Other platforms choose to end access on a specific date no matter when a new learner enters the system. 3) Specific Access Window Specific access windows are based on dates. An example of this would be the traditional semester system where there is a window of time that the learner is allowed in the class. Specific access windows are great for moving a “cohort” or group of learners through a program at one time. 4) Specific Launch (Ability to Buy) Window Specific launch windows are used for situations where a course can only purchased or enrolled in during a specific date range. One example of a launch window is where you sell access to a course that is “coming soon.” In other words, the course can be bought during the launch, but access comes later. Also after the launch window is closed, no one else can purchase the course. Launch windows are also used in traditional schools where classes are open for registration during a specific time. Combine Access with Pricing to Offer Your Courses and Memberships Now that you understand these four access models, you can combine that understanding with pricing models to launch your training platform with LifterLMS. One of the great things about LifterLMS is that you do not need a separate third party membership or eCommerce system to sell access to your courses and members-only content!

10 Pricing Models for Courses and Memberships

With the release of LifterLMS 3.0, came the new access plan engine which allows you to create just about any kind of pricing and access model that you can think of. Here’s a quick look at the the LifterLMS access plan engine (after you watch the video, scroll down and check out all the different pricing models you could use): The Top 10 Pricing Models for Your Online Courses and Memberships 1) One-Time Payment One-time payment pricing is as simple as it sounds. This is a good place to start, especially if you’re courses are passive in nature and you are not adding additional value as time goes on. 2) Flat Recurring Payment This is a daily, monthly, weekly, or yearly payment that is the same amount every time it recurs. Flat recurring payments are a good fit when there is ongoing value with things like monthly coaching or webinars. 3) Payment Plans Payment plans are often used alongside single payments. If a one-time payment for a course is $1,997, you might also offer 3 payments of $699 as a payment plan alongside the single payment option. In many cases the sum of the payment plan payments is greater than the one-time payment. 4) Free with Membership Free with membership pricing is usually used when courses are sold individually, but also included in a membership with other courses and/or other non-LMS content like certain posts or pages. The most common use of the free with membership model is to have a platform where courses are sold individually or you can get them all through one membership. The courses are accessed for free, as long as the customer has purchased the membership. 5) Members Only Pricing Members only pricing is for when a course is only available for purchase if a user is already in a specific membership. 6) The $1 Trial One dollar trials are designed to give initial access to a course or membership on the cheap, but then after a certain amount of time a larger one time or recurring payment begins. 7) The Free Trial Free trials are the same as the $1 trial except the trial period is completely free. In the example below there is a free one month trial. 8) Service Fee and Recurring Service fee and recurring pricing models are different from flat recurring in that the very first payment is higher than the recurring payments. 9) Launch or Special Occasion Sale Pricing Sale pricing is designed to encourage sales by presenting a temporary reduction in price. 10) Free Not all courses need to cost money. In fact some of the most successful online course platforms have a mix of free and paid courses. So Which Pricing Model is Best for You? The best way to think about pricing is to ask questions about value. If you are continually adding value, then a recurring model makes sense. If you have a lot to prove and trust to earn, then perhaps a dollar trial or free trial makes sense. If there’s a lot of cost to you in the beginning, and the beginning is where the most value is delivered, then think about a high cost one-time payment or a service fee model. Also If you’d like to maximize your sales in your pricing models, we’ve observed LifterLMS users getting the most success by leveraging both the LifterLMS Stripe integration (so you can accept credit cards) and the LifterLMS PayPal integration. When offering both, we get approximately 70% of sales through Stripe and 30% through PayPal in our experience. If you want to talk more about pricing, we’d …

There have also been significant design updates to LifterLMS elements to align with the latest design trends. I’m an existing LifterLMS user, how do I upgrade to 3.0? I understand there were changes in the pricing model in LifterLMS 3.0. Can you explain that clearly? The best way to understand LifterLMS pricing is to review the LifterLMS pricing table. From a pricing perspective, three things happened with the release of LifterLMS 3.0: The free LifterLMS became more powerful. A few features became more expensive (the optional PayPal and WooCommerce integrations). A new product bundle called the Universe Bundle has been introduced, which makes leveraging all the third party integration add-ons and design tools that LifterLMS offers now and in the future much cheaper. LifterLMS is a free plugin that allows you to create, sell, and protect engaging online courses. You can download it for free at LifterLMS.com. With LifterLMS 3.0, two integrations were moved out to premium add-ons and were given more advanced functionality LifterLMS PayPal LifterLMS WooCommerce With the release of LifterLMS 3.0, the Universe Bundle rolled out. This allows users to save big by offering all the third party integrations and design tools that LifterLMS makes as one package at big savings from the products’ combined retail value. People with existing active licenses can upgrade to the Universe Bundle and get their active licenses prorated. See the next section about that. We also launched a software scholarship program. The Future of Online Education | LifterLMS 3.0 and Beyond

I made a mistake. But before I get into that, I wanted to share a story with you … First I invite you to listen to Sir Ken Robinson tell the story of how every country in the world is currently reforming education in this video: I believe there are exciting, new, effective, and engaging ways to learn, thrive, teach, and facilitate learning in today’s world. Working on this problem and opportunity surrounding effective learning along with unlocking human potential is my life’s work. I’m not just thinking about next year or about the standard five year plan. I’m thinking generationally, focusing this work 50 – 100 years out. A personal journey with learning I love to learn. I’m a parent with daughters who also love to learn. I’m a very private person, but sharing a little bit of my personal story will help you see my root motivation and vision for the future of online education and LifterLMS. My children do not go to school, even though they are of school age. I’m not a big fan of labels, but you could label us as practicing “unschooling.” Unschooling is an educational method and philosophy that advocates learner-chosen activities as a primary means for learning. If a parent, teacher, or anyone for that matter, wants to support an unschooling learner, it is done by helping expose the learner to a variety of experiences allowing them to discover interests and communities on their own. Supporting unschoolers is all about facilitating and allowing the learner to lead. It is important to recognize that unschooling is not anti-school.  Rather it is about seeking out the most effective resources, at the right time, and in the right way for each individual learner. My approach isn’t as dogmatic as it may sound (which is why I don’t like labels). For example, my children enroll in specific classes in our community that interest them, like art and music. I am simply sharing my personal story, beliefs, and choices. Of course as a parent, mentor, or leader, we have a duty to protect unschoolers from unrecoverable mistakes. However most mistakes and failures are recoverable. We want lots of those kinds of mistakes, and we want reality to provide feedback on what’s working or not. “Real world” or reality-based feedback is a powerful teacher. Keep reading. In a little bit, I will show you an example of reality-based feedback related to the mistake that I made. Now if you think about it, we all have done some unschooling in our lives even if we didn’t realize it. As a kid I was bored and unengaged for much of my classroom time. I had a “good” education, but I could have gotten a lot more out of those years. It wasn’t until college that I was allowed to start making conscious decisions to lead my own education.  I persued classes that actually sounded interesting to me like anthropology, sociology, philosophy, sustainable development, appropriate technology, travel, and outdoor leadership. This was really the beginning of an unschooling approach for me. The secret sauce to unschooling that works for me includes: Taking leadership of my own path Continuously improving my craft and experimenting constantly (which I find easy when passion or interest is there) Surrounding myself with others who have chosen a similar path (no matter where they are on their journey) Many great things in my life have come from embodying these three personal truths. It is through this unschooling approach to life that I have found success in an outdoor leadership career in Alaska, a work-from-anywhere, semi-nomadic, married-with-kids lifestyle, and as the passionate online education software entrepreneur standing in front of you today. Again this is my personal journey and what’s evolved …

Get Ready for LifterLMS 3.0

LifterLMS 3.0 will be launching very soon. First, I’d like to thank you and the entire LifterLMS community for all the feedback and feature voting which helped us shape the upgrades included in LifterLMS 3.0. We are treating the release of LifterLMS 3.0 like a giant party! We will be offering some webinars and live streaming to discuss some of the benefits and new features of LifterLMS 3.0. Also to celebrate the launch, LifterLMS Pro members will be receiving a 25% discount code that they can use on any LifterLMS add-on. So What Exactly Is New in LifterLMS 3.0? Be sure to read the entire post so you’re up to speed on what’s coming, including the pricing changes. 1) Unified one-screen checkout The much anticipated simplified checkout flow is here. When a user clicks the button to enroll in a course, the registration (or login) is on the same screen as the checkout page. If you are accepting credit cards via the LifterLMS Stripe Extension, then the credit card input fields will be there as well.  If you are using Stripe and PayPal as checkout options, then the user can select which checkout option they prefer. PayPal checkout is of course an extra step, as the user needs to bounce over to PayPal to checkout, then bounce back to your site to start the course. 2) Powerful access plans so you can create just about any pricing model for your courses and memberships LifterLMS 3.0 has an incredibly versatile pricing and membership engine. Our terminology is changing from pricing to “Access Plans.” Access plans can be free or paid. Here are all the variable you have to work with: Plan Title Plan SKU Enroll Text Featured Is Free Price Frequency Plan Period Plan Length Access Expiration Plan Availability Memberships Trial Offer Trial Price Trial Length Sale Pricing Sale Price Sale Start Date Sale End Date You can see how just about any pricing and access requirement can be met with the all new course access plans builder. Courses can have multiple access plans associated with them as well. As an example pricing model for a course,  you might have a one-time payment option, a payment plan option, and then a free option if you’re already a member in a particular membership product. 3) More powerful automated course and membership access start and end functionality In LifterLMS 3.0 you have more control over when a course or membership can be purchased, allow users inside, and automatically remove users on circumstances you define. Here are a couple example scenarios: Sell a course that’s “coming soon,” but don’t allow users inside yet. Automatically remove a new student from a course after 90 days from purchase or on a specific date 4) An upgraded LifterLMS Stripe plugin that allows your website to be aware of when a recurring payment fails or card is declined so a user can be removed automatically from a course or membership The new LifterLMS Stripe integration that will roll out at the same time as LifterLMS 3.0 is way more advanced than it used to be. In conjunction with the new access plans feature for courses, Stripe let’s your website know when a recurring payment fails or card is declined so a user can be removed automatically from a course or membership. In the old version of LifterLMS a recurring payment would be set up at checkout with Stripe, but that was the end of the 2 systems interacting together. Now the integration is much more intelligent and useful. 5) PayPal will be moved out into it’s own add-on with more advanced functionality We’ve re-developed the …

Have you ever wondered how to increase sales into your learning platform through email marketing, sales and marketing automation, and intelligent automated follow ups? You can have this ideal powerful system when you combine LifterLMS with ActiveCampaign. LifterLMS + ActiveCampaign solve the same problem, but in 2 different areas. These software solutions help small business entrepreneurs reduce overwhelm and chaos from disjointed software tools strung together. You can accept one-time and/or recurring payments. 3) Membership Sell groups of courses, bundle in non-LMS content (like other posts or pages), or lock down your entire site with memberships. I don’t blame them, because we at LifterLMS use ActiveCampaign for our email marketing and CRM and LOVE it! Our community members that want deeper integration with ActiveCampaign have told us what they want the integration to look like and how it should function. We’re currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter the development costs of this integration so we can devote resources to it. Keep reading to discover how you can benefit from this and see the no-brainer way to get involved. Here are the 2 main ways the LifterLMS ActiveCampaign integration will work: 1) When a user purchases or enrolls in a course or membership, the contact details …

Income is nice, but the freedom to be your best, most authentic self and help others through that is a very powerful reward and reason for making online courses. First, I’d like to introduce you to a poem called Beautiful Rowdy Prisoners by a Sufi poet from the 14th century named Hafiz. The small man Builds cages for everyone He knows. While the sage, Who has to duck his head When the moon is low, Keeps dropping keys all night long For the Beautiful Rowdy Prisoners. In the video below I read this poem and unpack what it means to me as an education entrepreneur. So what does this mean for you, the online course creator, membership site owner, or learning management system administrator? There’s never been a better time to acknowledge your unique value (or value in others) and share that through online training and community. You can connect your unique value with anyone in the world through the internet. When you help someone, you are metaphorically in the theme of Hafiz’s poem, unlocking cages and releasing prisoners. You are creating real value in the world, and it’s sustainable, because you are embodying your best most authentic self in the process. If this message is resonating with you, and you don’t want to have to do the technical setup of your online course delivery platform, I would encourage you to check out this video and fill out the form below it on that page. I hope you find this message inspiring, and it helps you drop more keys and live a more fulfilled, authentic life through stepping into online education as you truly are.

How Does the LifterLMS Gravity Form Add-On Work? It’s simple. If a Gravity Form is present on a LifterLMS lesson, the form submission will replace the normal “Mark Complete” button function. Here’s a quick video about how LifterLMS lessons with Gravity Forms work together … What you put in your form is where it gets more interesting … 9 Ways You Could Use a Gravity Form on a LifterLMS Lesson 1 ) Collect a Survey or Testimonial – Collecting a testimonial or survey (instructor or course evaluation) at the end of your last LifterLMS lesson is great timing! 2) Create an Advanced Examination, Quiz, or Test – Gravity forms has many form field types so you can create complex forms for your learners to fill out to create an assessment experience. Currently the form entry gives you the submission and completes the lesson, but does not further integrate with LifterLMS any deeper as in with analytics or progress.   3) Collect Registration Details for an In-Person or Online Event – You can simply create a registration form to capture all the information you require for event registration. If the event is a paid upgrade, simply attach payment to submission of the form. 4) Collect Assignments or other Uploads – If you do not want your course to be passive, perhaps you have some assignments in play. Example assignments could be that you want your learners to upload something like a document or photograph. Forms don’t have to be just for collecting words on the screen. Feel free to leave a testimonial for LifterLMS by the way 😉 5) Collect Any Kind of Information – The word “Forms” sounds boring to many … but they’re not.
