What’s Next For the Best WordPress LMS?

When you choose to use a specific LMS technology it’s important to choose wisely.

The reality is that it will be difficult to switch later. And if you choose poorly, you can waste incredible amounts of time, money, and impact.

We don’t want you to end up with a “Software Frankenstein” website where you have a bunch of tools made by lots of different companies crammed together that don’t play nicely with each other.

You put your heart and soul into your project. At LifterLMS. We get that.

You deserve a first class Learning Management System technology suite to power your learning business dreams and goals.

LifterLMS is an all-in-one modern WordPress LMS designed to deliver on your core online course and training based membership site related needs and desires.

With LifterLMS …

  • You’re not forced to also need a separate ecommerce system.
  • You’re not forced to also need a separate membership plugin.
  • You’re not forced to also need separate engagement and gamification tools.
  • You’re not forced to also need a separate online community system.
  • You’re not forced to also need a separate coaching system.
  • You’re not forced to also need to piece together tons of different tools made by too many different companies to make your online training platform work.

There’s a place for bringing in other tools made by different companies, but we notice that the most successful websites take a minimalist approach. That’s why it’s important to choose a WordPress LMS foundation that values an all-in-one approach.

We think you’re really going to love what’s coming next to the LifterLMS suite of tools.

These new tools are designed to grow your business and deliver effective learning experiences …

First, Thank You

At LifterLMS, we’re known for listening and connecting with our community.

Our approach to what to build next for LifterLMS is driven by your voice.

We listen and learn about your goals, frustrations, problems, and dreams as course creators, coaches, influencers, entrepreneurs, and technology professionals.

That learning comes from real connections and real conversations we have with you.

So thank you for speaking up and all your input in places like the LifterLMS Facebook group, Slack, the Feature Request Form, the free training webinar discussions, the emails, the weekly mastermind calls, the chat, the public working group, and the live phone conversations.

If anything I’m about to share with you is exciting or something that you’ve been wishing to get for your website, I invite you to leave a comment on this blog post.

Your comment could be as simple as a “Yes!”

… Or let us know which new thing you are most excited about and why.

… Or elaborate on what specific features you see as essential to the new things we’re about to roll out.

We really appreciate your comment!

LifterLMS Groups!

Groups in a WordPress LMS tool is an essential feature for many.

We are designing the ultimate groups experience at LifterLMS and are very excited to roll this out to the community.

You’ll be able to sell training to a group in a fully automated fashion. There are group owners, group leaders, group reporting features, group management, and much, much more.

These new group features are especially helpful if you sell or offer courses or memberships in bulk into businesses, organizations, schools, universities, governments, corporations, or even parents buying courses for kids.

The economics of group sales of courses and memberships is worth exploring if you haven’t already.

As a hypothetical example, let’s assume you have a $1,000 sales training course. Selling a handful of those to individuals is great.

But what if you sold 100 course seats (in one sale) to a big company that has a large sales team in a particular industry?

And then what if there are 20 other companies like the one you just sold to in the same or in a similar industry?

Not every course is a good fit for B2B (Business to Business) volume sales, but many are.

How will you use groups?

What groups functionality do you see as essential?

Please speak up in the comments below.

Advanced Video

Video is eating the internet.

According to Cisco, by 2020 there will be close to 1 million minutes of video crossing the internet per second.

The coming LifterLMS Advanced Video add-on will give you lots of innovative features related to your embedded videos (Vimeo, Wistia, YouTube) or self-hosted videos.

Some key features of the LifterLMS Advanced Video add-on include:

  • The ability to require learners to watch the whole lesson video before they can complete the lessons
  • Advanced video analytics for that essential video effectiveness and consumption data
  • Player branding and player component controls
  • On return, resume video where left off
  • App-like lesson video options with some familiar Netflix-style user experiences

Video is a powerful communication tool, and LifterLMS is going next level for the video experience inside your courses.

Zapier Integration

A proper Zapier connection is coming, which will allow you to connect events in LifterLMS to 1,500+ other apps.

This will be a first class Zapier integration with LifterLMS listed inside the Zapier App directory.

For the techies out there, this is not a basic LifterLMS webhook generator that could theoretically be used with Zapier.

This is a professional Zapier accepted LifterLMS App listed inside the Zapier App directory. All this is possible because of the game-changing innovative LifterLMS Rest API.

If you’re not a techie, don’t worry about how this API business works. Just imagine being able to have some event in your LifterLMS powered website make things happen in 1500 + other applications like …

  • Google Sheets
  • Gmail
  • Twitter
  • Slack
  • Google Calender
  • Trello
  • Facebook
  • Asana
  • Calendly
  • Dropbox
  • YouTube
  • Acuity Scheduling
  • Google Docs
  • Zoom
  • MailChimp
  • ClickFunnels
  • ActiveCampaign
  • And many more

You’ll be able to cause things to happen in other apps when one of your students on your LifterLMS powered website does an action like …

  • Student creates a new account
  • Student enrolls in a specific course
  • Student purchases a specific course
  • Student completes a specific course
  • Student completes a specific lesson
  • Student completes a specific quiz
  • Student passes a specific quiz
  • Student fails a specific quiz
  • Student completes a specific section
  • Student completes a specific course track
  • Student enrolls in a specific membership
  • Student purchases a specific membership

Here are a simple few examples of things you could do in other apps automatically based on activity or events in LifterLMS:

  • Adding a new student’s contact details to a project management tool like Trello or Asana for your coaches
  • Building out a Google Sheets spreadsheet in Google Drive of people who complete your course so you can follow up with them for feedback, reviews, or testimonials
  • And countless other possibilities

It can also work the other way, too.

In addition to making things happen in other apps based off of events in LifterLMS …

You can also make things happen in LifterLMS based on events in other apps.

So for example you could:

  • Enroll someone in a free course when they schedule an appointment with you in Calendly or Acuity
  • Add someone to a LifterLMS course or membership when they purchase something through ClickFunnels
  • Enroll someone in a course when they register for a specific webinar in Zoom
  • And countless other possibilities.

How might you use LifterLMS with Zapier?

Custom Fields for LifterLMS

Custom Fields for LifterLMS will allow you to build custom registration forms for your whole platform, individual courses, and/or individual memberships.

You’ll be able to merge that custom data into the front end of the website and into the LMS reporting if you’d like.

Custom fields open up a vast world of dynamic personalization and use cases.

As an example, you could collect a company name on the registration and merge that data into a certificate if you’d like.

You could also view that company name in the LifterLMS reporting data.

You could even merge a message to the top of the student dashboard that says …

“Hi {first_name} {last_name} from {company_name}. What do you want to learn today?”

Custom fields can be used for users, orders, courses, memberships, etc.

LifterLMS Custom Fields will allow you to take full control of your custom field data wants and needs.

What custom field uses are most important to you?

Rest API

An advanced REST API is coming to Lifter!

“API” stands for Application Programming Interface. Basically an API allows one piece of software to talk to another piece of software.

For example, you could use the LifterLMS Rest API to build a:

  • Mobile App the syncs seamlessly with your WordPress LMS website
  • Reporting application that exists somewhere else on the internet that pulls data from your WordPress LMS website
  • Bridge to another application that you want to integrate your LMS with
  • LifterLMS add-on of your own that fulfills some market need

This LifterLMS Rest API allows developers to more easily and quickly connect, work with, and extend LifterLMS.

LifterLMS is known for high speed development of new features and benefits, but it’s about to accelerate even more because of the Rest API.

This Rest API also allows smart, innovative developers in our ecosystem to build tools and offer custom development solutions faster and easier when working with LifterLMS.

If you’re not a techie, think of a Rest API as the ability to more easily extend the digital experience of your WordPress LMS website to other places.

Yes!, But When?

The LifterLMS Rest API is in active development right now. And the order of new benefits and product releases coming to you from LifterLMS build on each other.

So here’s what you can expect in terms of timeline and release schedule:

  • LifterLMS Rest API: 8/15/19
  • LifterLMS Zapier: 8/15/19
  • LifterLMS Advanced Video: 9/15/19
  • LifterLMS Custom Fields: 10/15/19
  • LifterLMS Groups: 12/1/19

This is Amazing! How Much Money For This?

Some of it is free, and some of it is paid.

The LifterLMS Rest API is a FREE feature of the LifterLMS core. Any modern piece of professional quality software should have an open and accessible Rest API.

The LifterLMS Zapier integration will be FREE. In other words, we will not have a Zapier add-on to sell you. This is a professional Zapier integration. LifterLMS will be a legitimate app you can work with inside of the Zapier platform to create automation and application integrations to your heart’s content.

LifterLMS Groups, LifterLMS Advanced Video, and LifterLMS Custom Fields are individual Advanced Add-ons, which means they will each cost $199/year on release day.

We’ll be offering early adopter discounts where you can lock in a cheaper annual subscription if you pre-order either LifterLMS Groups, Advanced Video, or Custom Fields as an individual add-on purchase.

Advanced Add-Ons can be purchased individually a la carte or …

All Advanced Add-Ons are included in the LifterLMS Infinity Bundle.

If you already have the Infinity Bundle, these new add-ons will show up inside your account the instant they are released.

The LifterLMS Infinity Bundle is the everything bundle.

Advanced Add-Ons are not included in the Universe Bundle.

I know what you’re also thinking…

Is LifterLMS going to raise the price of the Infinity Bundle with all this new value coming to the bundle?

Nope, not with the release of these 3 new products we’ve just discussed.

We’re just giving you many more reasons to choose LifterLMS as your LMS technology partner. And if having the most powerful and extendable WordPress LMS system available is what you want, then the Infinity Bundle suite of tools becomes a “no-brainer” business decision.

But Wait, There’s More …

There’s a lot of other development happening at LifterLMS. For example LifterLMS PayPal 2.0 and new features for the certificate builder are in the works.

LifterLMS will continue to innovate in other areas outside of these new add-ons mentioned in this article…

The purpose of this blog post is to simply give you a heads up on the top highlights of what’s coming next.

We’re highlighting the new add-on benefits coming in the immediate future to your LifterLMS powered learning platform.

We’re keeping you in the loop on product details and release dates so you can plan accordingly.

      1. I’m excited about the Groups feature. I’ve been looking for this feature for a long time where I can provide virtual group coaching.

Please let me know about the early adopter availability for groups

  1. This is great. I am especially interested in the Advanced Video features! My client is required by their state government to enforce a rule that their students much watch the entire video before moving forward to the next step in the course. This new LifterLMS feature would allow us to no longer have to rely upon the third-party xAPI addon for this purpose.

    1. Chris Badgett

Thanks for sharing your excitement Tim. You are not alone. There have been a lot of requests from people wanting this video feature for their LifterLMS lessons.

  2. I’m very excited to be able to build custom registration forms cause I am forced to use another plugin for this Thanks! And the Zap integration is a no brainer…

  3. Yay for the Advanced Video!

    1. I would love some improvements in the student dashboard.
Would love to be able to easily hide displays of achievements, memberships, author, etc.
I’m having to write a ton of CSS to even get it looking halfway decent.

    2. An easy way to edit button and highlight colours, standard and hover.

    3. Most people use page builders like Divi & Elementor to build their websites. Would be great to have more separate shortcodes for single lesson/course post elements. Eg. Video, nav / complete buttons, editor content.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. I totally agree! I use Elementor Pro and would love to be able to design the Lifter pages of my website using Elementor so they look more like MY brand :)))) Pleeeease consider this feature!

  4. Johanna Koskimies

Can you read minds? I just showed LifterLMS to someone who’s currently using another LMS but not very happy with it. They are looking for an LMS where the student could resume the video where they last left off, and where they could make sure the student watches the whole video before moving on to the next lesson. So, the Advanced Video is really, really good news ! Thanks for that, and all the other magic you guys are doing, as well!

  5. Great these new features. I’m specially interested in Groups because our customers starts in groups.

So could you tell me more about wich features will be included in Groups?

Advanced videos sounds great specially that you can continue where you stopped.

Wil it also be possible to show somehow which videos you have already looked. Like with changing the colors for instance?

    1. Chris Badgett

Hi Danny, glad to hear you’re interested in Groups!

The main features on the initial release of Groups are:

Buying for a group (Group Owner)
Managing a group as with student invites, reporting access, student management (Group Leader)
        Group Reporting

The group owner and group leader may be different people or not.

LifterLMS products continue to evolve after the initial release. In terms of the Advanced Videos, they will be able to resume where they left off, and the video will appear played if they have already made it through. We will post more details, screenshots, and demo videos as we get further a long in the development process.

If you have really specific advanced video features you would like to have, please vote and add a comment here in Trello.

  6. Great work everyone! With the Advanced Video add-on, would it be possible to incorporate chapter markers to embedded Vimeo videos somehow? Either on the scrubber itself or links that will jump to a specific time? That would put me on board 100%.

  7. Go go go for the LifterLMS Groups ! I Have a lot of limitation with my B2B clients.

The advanced videos sounds great also !

    Thanks !

  8. Some exciting developments! I’m really loving the zapper connection – that is going to open so many possibilities! The groups thing sounds interesting – I would love to learn more about that!

I love this LMS already, but looks like it just got even better!

  9. Fantastic!!! So many great developments!! Thanks guys. Looking forward to the custom fields and enhanced integration with Vimeo. Also, the Zapier add on is going to be a game changer (once I learn how to use it properly!)
Thanks again to you all at Lifterlms. It’s good to know you are working so hard to help all of us course creators deliver excellence.

  10. Where to start… uhm, THANK YOU!!

I am excited to see the new features and the rollout timeline. One can already do amazing things with both the free and paid version of Lifter, but these additions will only power this great tool. I like that you share impressive tools for both the free version and the Infinity Bundle. It is pretty cool offering special pricing for buying these tools independently as add-ons to the free version. So cool.

The main new feature I am most excited about is the Video. You’re adding some killer features like mandatory play through before completing a lesson. I know some will find this annoying, but for an instructor, this seems like a very valuable asset not only for formal higher ed but also for the little guys. I am curious about what this will bring about. Will it replace Wistia? Will this mean videos are not embedded but self-hosted through our lifter hosted account? I’ll be excited to see the branding capabilities, the ability to step up the user experience by remembering where they left off (this is so awesome), and also what the “Netflix” type experienced mentioned. I’m intrigued for sure.

Being very big on COMMUNITY, I am also excited to see how Groups will play out. I am wondering… is this mostly to add to social learning or is this more about giving larger clients the ability to manage teams taking our courses?

All the add-ons look killer, but these are the ones I am geeking to check out. I am excited to see Lifter continue to grow and improve and I am thankful that you guys are willing to add these new add ons for no increase in price via the Infinity Bundle. Thanks for continuing to rock it, my friends. I Love Lifter!

    1. Chris Badgett

Thank you for the detailed comment Dale!

LifterLMS Advanced Videos will not replace Wistia. It will allow you to better control the viewing experience on the front end of the embedded Wistia, Vimeo or YouTube Video. It will also work with self hosted video which we will elaborate on in a future post. In terms of Netflix inspiration we will be taking inspiration from things like full focus on the video content and progression ideas through multiple videos. This will make more sense and we will share screenshots and make demo videos about it as we get further along in the development process.

The initial roll out of groups is more about reducing friction when selling courses in bulk (think bulk seats in the course or membership) into a business, organization, school, corporation, family, etc. But you are wise to mention Social Learning aspects in terms of groups as that is something we’ve got our eye on too.

Also, Thanks for the kind words. Great to be with you on the journey!

  11. I’d like to see a ‘no activity’ by a student being a trigger for a response. eg if student does not interact for a given period, say 5 days, this triggers a notification to the administrator.

  12. Hi there,

It’s great to see the innovation continuing.
The REST API & custom fields would both be extremely useful.

Having said that, I’d also love to see some time spent addressing a few gaps/issues in the existing product that have been around for a while. For example:
    * courses sold via voucher codes do not honour the course access plan expiration config (we sell a lot of courses by vouchers so this causes a lot of manual work)
    * the ability to send a test email from email engagements
    * engagement triggers to allow alerting when dripfeed lesson content becomes available

    Thanks

    Tim

  13. I love that Lifter LMS will do so many different things and your team of creators is always inventing new ways to help us.
The changes that you are making in groups does that make the groups something like Study Church? I was looking at their groups facebook kind of thing and was wondering if this is anything like that? Either way I think it is amazing that there are so many different ways to improve teaching on line and its all here in Lifter LMS. Great job!!

  14. LifterLMS Groups!!! Awesome to see it’s on the way. We had a plugin built to manage group registrations and student management on its own dashboard. I really like the roles of leader and owner. We’re missing that aspect of it in our plugin and it’s something that is needed in our industry.

I noticed you’ve thought it through quite a bit as you cover many of the aspects we’ve implemented.

We are selling memberships, so each member (our client) gets a certain number of enrolments and benefits linked to their membership level. We also have the option where clients can buy additional enrolments at a fixed cost if they require more enrolments for that month. Is this something you would be able to offer in the Groups functionality?

Looking forward to seeing more details about the functionality!

    1. Thanks for your enthusiasm, Dirk! At this time, I the features of Groups are as outlined in the blog post — that being said we love community feedback so we appreciate hearing what would be useful to you!

  15. Hey Chris and Team,

This is all great news. As an Infinity member, I look forward to the additions and am excited to play. I am especially intrigued at the Zapier tie in and while I know I could automate much more of my site, I really need to study up on these tools and their implementation. I have been working on adding content to the Manana No Mas! property and it is ready for prime time, so now my focus has been promotion and exploring different sales models — memberships, courses, learning tracks, affiliates, etc…

I’ve been playing with Zoom, Podcasts, FB Live, and YouTube. Adding more video functionality is right behind the Zapier thing for me. Well Done!! — Kurt

  16. Hi Chris,

these are great new features. Sadly we do not need them 🙁

What we really are in need of is big extension of gamification.

What we are in need of is:
    1. the possibility to give the students points ate tricker points, like: when a student log-ins, when if finish a course, lesson, when the looked at a (Vimeo) video, these kinds of triggers.

    2. Then we can determine per trigger how many points the user receives

    3. When curtain number of points are reached the possibility to give the student a batch or certificate and that to be able to set a Tag in ActiveCampaign (we use WP Fusion to connect LifterLMS with ActiveCampaign.

    4. An big extension of the certificates features now in LiferLMS, for instance that we can upload our own graphic or PDF where we then can position the number of points, the name etc.

    5. A short code with which we can display all the certificates the student has earned. A page which we can design with BeaverBuilder

This is something we are really are in need for.

Hope that the gamification becomes a real upgrade soon in a way which we can also determine our own design (with BeaverBuilder)

Is this on the road map with high priority?

    1. Hi Danny,

Thanks for letting us know what would be most useful to you. I’ve passed your feedback along to our team. We love feedback from the community and try to prioritize features that would be the most useful to the most people!

  17. This is utter brilliance. Way to go Lifter LMS team!
A learning management system made easy enough a fool like me can make it work. And robust enough for me to not look like a fool.
    Love you guys!

  18. When I initially commented I clicked the
“Notify me when new comments are added” checkbox and now each time a
comment is added I get several emails with the same comment.

Is there any way you can remove people from that service? Thanks a lot!

    1. I believe you need to uncheck that box yourself…there is no way to do it from my side. But, I also think there is an option to remove yourself at the bottoms of the emails you are receiving.

  19. Geez Louise! Where do I start to list my favourites??

I’d have to say at the TOP of my list is Groups and Video.

Together, they nail my dreams of creating the BEST user experience everrrrr!

    Thanks guys, you so rock!
